BAZIOTES, William (1912 – 1963)
Born in Pittsburgh and brought up in Reading, Pa., 1913-1933. He moved to New York in 1933 and entered the National Academy of Design, where he studied until 1936, From 1936-1938 he taught on the WPA Federal Art Project, New York, and then worked on the easel painting project from 1938-1941. He participated in the important International Surrealist Exhibition, organized by the Coordinating Council of the French Relief Societies, at the Whitelaw Reid Mansion, New York, 1942. His first one-man show was held at Peggy Guggenheim's gallery, Art of This Century, 1944. He was awarded first prize in the Chicago Art Institute exhibition of Abstract and Surrealist American Art, 1947, and the purchase prize at the University of Illinois exhibition of Contemporary American Painting, 1951. In association with Motherwell, Rothko and Barnett Newman he founded in 1948 the school, Subjects of the Artist, which was the forerunner of the informal organization of avant-garde New York artists called The Club. He has taught at the Brooklyn Museum Art School, 1949-1952; New York University, 1949-1952; People's Art Center of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1950-1952; and since 1952 at Hunter College, New York. He has had one-man shows in New York regularly since 1946 at the Kootz Gallery; also Galerie Maeght, Paris, 1947. His work was represented at the following exhibitions: 15 Americans, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1952; The New Decade, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, circulating to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Colorado Springs, and St. Louis, 19551956; The Magical Worlds of Redon, Klee, Baziotes, Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, 1957; The New American Painting, organized by The Museum of Modern Art, shown in Basel, Milan, Madrid, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, London, New York 19581959. He has also taken part in the following international exhibitions: Sao Paulo Bienal, 1951, 1953; Pittsburgh International, 1952, 1955, 1958; Documenta II, Kassel, 1959.
