BAZAINE, Jean (21st December, 1904 - 4th March 2001)
Born in Paris and grew up at Forges (lle-de-France). Worked at sculpture while attending the university; after taking his degree (Licence ès lettres) he enrolled in the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. After 1924 he devoted himself entirely to painting and attended classes at the Académie Julian. His first exhibition was held at the Galerie Van Leer, Paris, in 1932; thereafter, until the outbreak of war, he exhibited at the Galerie Jeanne Castel. In 1937 he designed stainedglass windows for a private chapel: The Instruments of the Passion. Awarded the Blumenthal Prize in 1938. In 1941, at the Galerie Braun, Paris, he organized the exhibition entitled "Vingt Peintres de Tradition Françise". Published his Notes sur la peinture d'aujourd'hui ( 1948, 1953, 1955). Designed stained-glass windows for the church at Assy, Haute-Savoie (19441946), a mosaic for the façade of the church at Audincourt near Belfort ( 1948-1951), and wired glass walls for the baptistery of the latter church ( 1954). In 1958 he designed stained-glass windows for the church at Villeparisis (Seine-et-Marne) and a large mosaic for the new Unesco building in Paris. Long painting trips in Spain ( 1953-1954) and Holland ( 1956-1957). Spent the summer of 1958 at Saint-Guénolé (Finistère). From 1948 on he exhibited at the Galerie Carré, then at the Galerie Maeght, which organized three large showings of his works in 1949, 1955 and 1957. In 1950 he exhibited at the Pittsburgh International, where he served as a jury member in 1952. Took part in the Sao Paulo Bienal ( 1951, 1953), the Younger European Painters exhibition, Guggenheim Museum, New York ( 1954), and the New Decade exhibition, Museum of Modern Art, New York ( 1955), and Documenta ll, Kassel ( 1959). Large-scale Bazaine retrospective held in 1958 at the Kunsthalle, Bern.
