MICHAUX, Henri (1899-1984)
Born at Namur, Belgium, where he spent his childhood and early youth, with frequent stays in the country. Then he moved to Brussels, where he lived until about 1920, Settled in Paris in 1923 and devoted himself to writing. Began to travel: worked his way across the Atlantic as a deckhand, spent a year in Ecuador, crossed the Pacific and visited India, China and the Indian Archipelago, and came back to Europe by way of Egypt. His experiences and impressions in foreign lands inspired a long series of books and poems, many of which he illustrated himself; Ecuador ( 1929), Un certain Plume ( 1930), La nuit remue ( 1931), Un barbare en Asie ( 1932), Voyage en grande Garabagne ( 1936), Au pays de la magie ( 1942), Epreuves, Exorcisme ( 1943), Ici Poddema and L'espace du dedans ( 1944), Face aux verrous ( 1954), Misérable miracle ( 1956), L'infini turbulent ( 1957). Devoted himself more and more to drawing and painting, and began taking mescaline, which enabled him to give the freest possible expression to emotions and sensations. Exhibited drawings in Paris at the Galerie Rive Gauche ( 1946), gouaches at the Galerie René Drouin ( 1948), and ink sketches, gouaches and drawings at the Galerie Daniel Cordier ( 1959). Awarded the Einaudi Prize at the 1960 Venice Biennale.
