KLINE, Franz (1910-1962)
Born at Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and grew up in Philadelphia. He studied at Girard College, Philadelphia, and attended art classes at Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts, 1931-1935. He lived in England in 1937-1938, studying at Heatherly's Art School in London. He went to New York in 1938; first exhibited at the Annuals of the National Academy of Design, 1942-1945. The Egan Gallery, New York, gave him his first one-man show in 1950; since then he has had frequent one-man exhibitions in the United States and Europe; in New York most recently at the Sidney Janis Gallery. He has taught at Black Mountain College, North Carolina, 1952; Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York, 1953-1954; Philadelphia Museum School of Art, 1954. Now lives in New York. His work was included in the following exhibitions: The New Decade, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, circulating to San Francisco, Los Angeles, Colorado Springs and St. Louis, 1955-1956; 12 Americans, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 1956; The New American Painting, organized by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and shown in Basel, Milan, Madrid, Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, London, and New York, 1958-1959; the Pittsburgh International, 1952, 1955, 1958; Venice Biennale, 1956, 1960; Sao Paulo Bienal, 1957; Guggenheim International Award, New York, 1958, 1960; and Documenta II, Kassel, 1959.
