ABSTRACT ART IN HOLLAND

Almost the same thing happened in Holland as in Belgium: the Stijl group was left without successors. The young painters emigrated and became known, much later, as advance-guard artists of repute in their country of adoption. There were, of course, a few isolated exceptions such as Werkman who has already been discussed and who was the only abstract artist in Holland between 1925 and 1930, and a little before him but for a very short period A. C. Willinck. This is another case in which abstract art came to the fore after the country was liberated. The principal abstract painters now working in Holland are Sinemus, Van der Vossen, Willy Boers, Rooskens, Frieda Hunziker, Ouborg, Will, and Alkema.
